Snowfall
Winter had always been his favourite season. The slight nip in the air, the white puffs his breath made when he walked out in the frigid evening. As a child he ran around, carefree and happy, while big wet snowflakes fell from the sky, blanketing the ground in a pristine shade of white.
He'd often thought it was as close to heaven as he might make it sometimes.
The children and he would run around, cheeks red and frozen, as they scooped handfuls, throwing it amongst themselves. They would build snowmen, make snow angels, and in general, become a cold sopping mess to be greeted with a warm hug and a cup of tea or cocoa.
As an adult, he walked the streets of a bustling city, cars blaring their horns and people everywhere. The snow came down white, but turned dark with mud and polution, ruining the peaceful images from his childhood.
Sorrow tore at his chest when he saw people bustling around, dirtying the snow and not recognizing the wonder of the season. The ache grew every time the thermometer dipped.
He longed for the days of his childhood with a fond smile tugging at his lips.
He spent his days in the meadow now, enjoying a rich sunset and comforting, soft grass. However, once in awhile, he could close his eyes and feel icy snowflakes fluttering down from above.
